Family Tragedy Amidst Natural Disaster

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Eliezer Alfonzo Jr., who was recently promoted to the major leagues, is grieving the loss of his family following the catastrophic earthquakes in Venezuela. On Sunday, it was confirmed that his 16-year-old sister, Eliana, and his stepmother, Patricia, were found deceased in La Guaira, as reported by journalist Daniel Álvarez-Montes.

The victims had been missing since the dual earthquakes struck the region on June 24. Eliezer Alfonzo Sr., the player's father and former MLB catcher, had been tirelessly searching through the debris of the hotel where they were staying. While search efforts successfully recovered Eliana’s dog alive and located Patricia’s mobile phone on Friday, the search ultimately ended in heartbreak.

The Impact of the Venezuelan Earthquakes

The disaster unfolded on June 24, when a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck near San Felipe, followed almost immediately by a second tremor measuring 7.5. The devastation has been immense, with reports indicating that the death toll has exceeded 2,900 people, with approximately 16,600 individuals sustaining injuries.

Eliezer Sr., who enjoyed a six-season career in the MLB with teams such as the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres, had been staying at the same hotel but had departed prior to the quakes to attend to his professional duties with the Delfines de la Guaira.

Alfonzo Jr.’s Journey to the MLB

Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. is currently navigating his 10th season in professional baseball. After beginning his career as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers in 2016 and progressing through the Triple-A ranks, the 26-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers this past offseason. Prior to his promotion, he impressed with a .313 batting average for the Oklahoma City Comets.

The Dodgers called up Alfonzo Jr. to provide essential depth at the catcher position following an injury to Will Smith. Despite the profound personal loss, Alfonzo Jr. chose to proceed with his MLB debut on Sunday. He honored his family by writing a tribute on his hat, receiving a warm and supportive ovation from the Dodgers faithful during his first at-bat.

Game Results

On the field, the San Diego Padres secured a 5-2 victory over the Dodgers on Sunday, preventing a series sweep. Despite the setback, the Dodgers maintain a strong position in the NL West with a record of 59-32.
