The game, which was expected to be a highlight of the non-conference schedule, faced multiple complications, including a venue shift and disputes over broadcast rights that ultimately made the event untenable.
The Root of the Broadcast Dispute
The primary friction stemmed from conflicting claims over media rights. The game was initially set to be hosted at Madison Square Garden in New York City, serving as a focal point for an agreement involving the ACC, Duke, and Amazon. However, the Big Ten contested this arrangement.
According to sources, the Big Ten claimed ownership of the broadcast rights based on a prior agreement with the ACC. The logic behind the dispute was rooted in the rotation of neutral-site games:

Following a previous matchup in Washington, D.C., which fell under the ACC's purview, the Big Ten asserted that the upcoming New York game belonged to their rights holders. Despite an attempt to salvage the event by moving it to LoanDepot Park in Miami, the scheduling difficulties proved insurmountable. As a result, Duke has pivoted to a different opponent, scheduling a game against Texas Tech at Madison Square Garden for the same date.
Changes Within the Michigan Program
The landscape of the Michigan program has shifted significantly since the game was first proposed. The team underwent major transitions following the departure of head coach Dusty May, who left for an assistant role with the Dallas Mavericks. The subsequent draft also saw the departure of key talent, including lottery picks from their championship roster.
