We have reached the final week for teams hovering on the bubble to make their case for an NCAA tournament bid. As conference tournaments commence, several programs must secure wins to solidify their standing before Selection Sunday.
Miami (Ohio) (31-0)
Despite an undefeated regular season—a feat unmatched by any other top-tier college basketball program—the RedHawks face uncertainty. While they are essentially guaranteed a spot in the tournament, their seed remains in flux. Miami is currently not the favorite to win the MAC tournament; Akron holds that distinction. If Miami misses out on the automatic bid, there is a distinct possibility the MAC could send two teams to March Madness, though this would displace another bubble contender.
Missouri (20-11)
The Tigers appear to be in a safe position, but a poor showing in the SEC tournament could force them into the First Four games in Dayton. After losing their final two regular-season games, Missouri dropped to the No. 8 seed in the SEC bracket. A potential matchup against Kentucky on Thursday serves as a pivotal opportunity to solidify their standing.
Auburn (16-15)
Auburn's precarious status highlights the lack of depth among bubble teams this year. Having dropped eight of their last ten games, the Tigers are struggling. A first-round exit in the SEC tournament against Mississippi State would likely end their tournament hopes, whereas a win or two could potentially sway the committee in their favor.
Indiana (18-13)
The Hoosiers have squandered their recent chances, losing five of their last six matchups. Their recent track record is concerning, particularly a home loss to a low-ranked Northwestern side. Indiana will look to redeem themselves in the second round of the Big Ten tournament against the winner of the Penn State versus Northwestern contest.
Cincinnati (17-14)
The Bearcats have played their way into the bubble conversation by winning six of their last eight games. However, a weak non-conference performance remains a significant hurdle. Their path is clear but difficult: they must navigate the Big 12 tournament, with a potential marquee victory over Arizona serving as their best chance to earn an at-large bid.
Santa Clara (26-7)
After a dramatic 76-71 victory over Saint Mary’s, the Broncos have advanced to face Gonzaga for an automatic bid. While a win secures their place, Santa Clara’s strong 15-3 regular season in the WCC and their 2-1 record against Saint Mary’s provide a solid argument even if they fall short in the title game.
Virginia Tech (19-12)
Following a rough 4-6 stretch to close the regular season, the Hokies finished 12th in the ACC. They face a must-win situation starting Tuesday against Wake Forest. To improve their tournament outlook, Virginia Tech likely needs a follow-up victory over Clemson on Wednesday.
VCU (24-7)
VCU remains the Atlantic 10's best hope for multiple tournament bids. After a stellar 15-3 conference campaign, the Rams enter the A-10 tournament with high expectations. Anything less than a championship game appearance would likely be viewed as a significant setback for their NCAA aspirations.
