Sudden Departure at TPC Sawgrass

Collin Morikawa’s campaign at this year's The Players Championship came to an abrupt end after completing only a single hole. The two-time major winner was forced to withdraw from the competition immediately after experiencing a sharp pain during a practice swing, which left him visibly distressed and holding his lower back.

Morikawa's Account of the Injury

Speaking shortly after his departure, the golfer expressed his frustration and confusion regarding the sudden onset of the issue:

«I felt fine in warm-up. Like, nothing’s been any signs of back problems. And teed it up on 11, and took one practice swing, and I just knew it was gone. Like I just had the feeling before when it’s happened. And I just, I can’t swing through it. Trust me, I would play if I could. It’s just the worst thing in the world.»

High Expectations Cut Short

Heading into the event, Morikawa was considered one of the top contenders. His current form has been impressive, highlighted by a victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this season. Furthermore, he secured a seventh-place finish at the Genesis Invitational and earned a fifth-place spot at the Arnold Palmer Invitational just last week.

Earlier in the week, the athlete had emphasized his commitment to physical conditioning, noting his focus on improving strength and fitness to support his demanding golf swing. He previously explained the necessity of proper body rotation and separation for his technique, noting that even if his movement appeared correct on camera, the physical mechanics behind his ball striking require significant physical integrity.

Impact on the Tournament

It became immediately apparent on Thursday morning that Morikawa was unable to perform at his required level. As a result of his withdrawal, his playing partners, Si Woo Kim and Ludvig Åberg, will proceed as a twosome for the remainder of the first round and the entirety of Friday's play.
