A Humbled Return to the Cage

Almost 48 hours following a 17-second defeat that marked the end of her 17-year hiatus from professional fighting, Gina Carano has spoken out about her highly anticipated matchup against UFC legend Ronda Rousey.

In an extensive social media update, the 44-year-old expressed a sense of heaviness, admitting that her performance did not align with her personal goals.

“I wanted to throw, battle, win, but I kicked when I should have moved and was down and done,”
Carano explained. She noted the severity of the submission, adding, “If I hadn’t tapped she would’ve broken my arm, as it had begun to crackle. The disappointment of losing like that is very humbling.”

A Legacy of Trailblazing

Before stepping away from the cage to pursue an acting career, Carano (7-2) served as a primary pioneer for women’s mixed martial arts. Her career was defined by milestones, including participating in the first televised women’s fight on Showtime in 2007 and headlining the historic Strikeforce featherweight championship bout against Cris Cyborg in 2009. Her return to the spotlight was orchestrated at the personal invitation of Rousey for a major streaming event.

The Physical Toll and Looking Ahead

Preparation for the bout proved to be an immense physical challenge. Carano revealed she underwent a rigorous transformation, shedding 100 pounds over 20 months to return to competition form. She described the process as an incredibly demanding experience, stating that training often felt like “swimming as hard as I could upstream.”

Despite the difficult outcome, Carano remains optimistic about her future. Reflecting on encouragement received from top-tier fighters like Jon Jones and Cain Velasquez, she feels empowered to continue her journey. “Now I feel like this is just the beginning,” she wrote, signaling that she is eager to explore the next chapter of her physical evolution.

The athlete also expressed her admiration for her opponent, sharing: “I’m so glad the world got to experience this version of Ronda Rousey—I found a beautiful woman, wife, mother, daughter, sister and legend. I adore you lady.”
