Innovative Surgery for Snell

In a move to address persistent elbow discomfort, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell is set to undergo a specialized surgical procedure. According to Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes, the team hopes this semi-experimental approach will expedite the pitcher's return to the mound, mirroring the path taken by Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal.

Snell was placed on the injured list last week due to the presence of loose bodies in his left elbow. This development follows a similar issue faced by Dodgers closer Edwin Díaz, who was sidelined in April with a comparable condition in his right elbow.

The NanoNeedle Advantage

The surgery will be performed on Tuesday by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, a renowned orthopedic surgeon. Instead of traditional arthroscopic surgery, Dr. ElAttrache utilizes the "NanoNeedle Scope 2.0." This advanced tool offers significant benefits over conventional methods:

  • Size: While a standard arthroscope measures 4 millimeters in diameter, the NanoNeedle is significantly smaller at just 1.9 millimeters.
  • Precision: The thinner fiber-optic tube allows for smaller incisions, reducing trauma to the surrounding tissue.
  • Efficiency: This technology previously allowed Dr. ElAttrache to successfully extract a bone fragment roughly the size of a lima bean from Skubal's elbow.

Hope for a Rapid Return

The medical community is optimistic about the recovery timeline for this procedure. While traditional recovery estimates are often lengthy, the "Skubal scope" method is credited with reducing Skubal’s projected absence from two months to just 4-to-6 weeks. Notably, Skubal was already back in the bullpen throwing less than a fortnight after his operation.

Regarding his recovery, Skubal shared his experience with reporters:

«I'm trying to keep the governor on a little bit. That's the guidance I've been told is just, 'Hold it back, you're going to feel good, but try to keep the reins on a little bit, and then as you respond well, and as you keep bouncing back well from each bullpen session, just kind of go out there and compete.' I think that's the hardest part right now, because I feel really good and want to let it go. But I've been instructed not to.»

Dodgers’ Outlook

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed confidence in the procedure, noting that the team is encouraged by the potential for a swifter rehabilitation. While a definitive return date for Snell has not been established, the organization remains positive. "Expect him certainly back this season. Don’t know really a timetable, but I think just kind of with the MRI, the scans and everything, we feel good about getting sooner rather than later," Roberts stated.
