From Hockey Rinks to the Fairway
Donohue’s journey to professional golf is unconventional. Nicknamed after the titular character of the BBC cartoon “Muzzy in Gondoland,” he spent his youth as a standout athlete in both hockey and golf. While he eventually chose to pursue golf collegiately—first at Boston College and later at Santa Clara—his background as a multi-sport athlete remains a defining part of his development.
Prior to this week, Donohue’s professional experience was limited to the Latinoamerica circuit, where he struggled to maintain status. However, a recent victory at the Minnesota State Open provided the necessary momentum to compete on the big stage.
The Emotional Drive
This week carries significant emotional weight for Donohue, as his grandmother, Marcey, passed away on Monday. Carrying her memory with him, he has honored her by featuring the name “Grandma” on his golf balls and markers. Donohue credits her as a source of strength during his performance, noting:
«Yeah, my grandma was definitely with me this week, too. Or today. Yesterday, she left me for the first 10 holes or so, then she kind of came into play. Yeah, she's looking down on me and looking out for me. It was a good day.»
Overcoming Nerves and Analyzing the Game
Stepping onto the course alongside stars like World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler proved intimidating at first. Donohue admitted to feeling overwhelmed until fellow professional Steven Fisk provided some essential advice. “He kind of sat me down on Wednesday and gave me a little pep talk and told me that I belong here, and that they’re just normal guys out there,” Donohue shared.
In a unique twist, Donohue opted to have his cousin, Harrison, serve as his caddie. While Harrison lacks extensive professional golf knowledge, his role as a “vibes guy” has been crucial in preventing Donohue from over-analyzing his shots. By focusing on maintaining a relaxed mental state, Donohue has managed to avoid the pitfalls of outcome-based goal setting, choosing instead to stay focused on the present moment.
