Texas Tech announced Monday that quarterback Brendan Sorsby would take a leave of absence to seek inpatient treatment for a gambling addiction. Sorsby, who transferred from Cincinnati in the offseason, reportedly placed bets while at Indiana in 2022.
According to Yahoo Sports and USA Today, Cincinnati was reportedly aware of Sorsby’s betting activities since last fall and was alerted before the 2025 season. The university declined to comment.
The Big 12 uses the ProhiBet app to monitor student-athlete betting. Sorsby reportedly wagered on Cincinnati Reds games and UFC fights. College athletes face strict rules, with potential bans for betting on collegiate or professional sports.
If Cincinnati knew and took no action, it could face NCAA sanctions. Sorsby has one season of eligibility left. His leave coincides with a lawsuit from Cincinnati seeking $1 million over his transfer.
