North Dakota State's anticipated move to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) is nearing reality. Sources indicate the Mountain West Conference is in serious dialogue to add the FCS powerhouse as a football-only member, with a deal potentially finalized this weekend.
The long-discussed move comes at a significant price. NDSU is expected to pay a substantial eight-figure entry fee to join the conference, a growing standard for schools seeking promotion. The school would also owe a separate $5 million NCAA entry fee.
If finalized, the Mountain West would have 10 football members for 2026, including football-only programs NDSU and Northern Illinois, alongside Air Force, UNLV, and other full members. North Dakota State, winner of 10 of the last 15 FCS national championships, has long sought to compete at the highest Division I level.
The discussions follow the Mountain West's new media rights deal and occur amid ongoing lawsuits involving the conference and the Pac-12. NDSU's other sports would likely remain in the Summit League.
