Injury Concerns After Singles Defeat
Serena Williams’ return to the Wimbledon courts faces a significant hurdle. Following a first-round singles loss to Maya Joint, the 44-year-old tennis legend is dealing with a right knee injury that places her scheduled doubles appearance alongside her sister, Venus Williams, in jeopardy.
According to information provided by her agent, Jill Smoller, Williams experienced discomfort toward the conclusion of the opening set. The physical toll was visible post-match, as the injury resulted in swelling significant enough that tournament staff suggested she use crutches, an offer the athlete ultimately declined.
Recovery Efforts and Scheduling
Despite the setback, there remains a glimmer of hope. In an official statement, Smoller noted:
«Serena tweaked her right knee at the end of the first set and was therefore excused from her media obligations by the Wimbledon and WTA medical teams. She left the site that night unaided and is doing everything she can to be ready for her doubles match later this week.»
While Serena was not listed for practice sessions on Wednesday, her sister Venus was on the practice schedule, suggesting that the team is still preparing for their opening match, which is currently set for Thursday, July 2.
The Comeback Context
The doubles appearance carries high expectations, as it would be the first time the sisters have reunited on the grass courts of Wimbledon since their 2016 title-winning run. Serena’s professional return has been highly anticipated since she announced her comeback in June, following her retirement from the sport after the 2022 U.S. Open.
Prior to her singles match, Serena had been testing her fitness at the HSBC Championships and the Berlin Open. Although her singles comeback ended prematurely against the 20-year-old Joint, the focus now shifts to whether her physical condition will allow for a return to the court alongside Venus later this week.
