A Major Shakeup in the Pitching Rotation
With the 2026 MLB trade deadline approaching, the first significant move of the season has officially taken place. According to reports from The Athletic, the Houston Astros are parting ways with veteran starting pitcher Lance McCullers Jr., sending him to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Although McCullers held a no-trade clause in his existing contract, he opted to waive it to facilitate the deal. This move marks the conclusion of the pitcher’s impressive 12-year association with the Houston organization.
Filling the Void in Milwaukee
The Brewers are looking to fortify their pitching staff, which currently boasts a 3.48 ERA—the second-best team mark in the league, trailing only the New York Yankees. The necessity for depth became acute following recent injury setbacks:
- Brandon Woodruff was moved from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL just before the All-Star break due to a persistent shoulder issue.
- Kyle Harrison was also sidelined this week, dealing with elbow soreness.
McCullers' Path to Recovery
McCullers enters this new chapter seeking a fresh start after a challenging run in Houston. Throughout the current season, he has struggled to find his rhythm, posting a 2-3 record with a 6.86 ERA. He is hopeful that the environment in Milwaukee will serve as a catalyst for a return to his previous form.
Throughout his career, the veteran has faced significant obstacles due to physical setbacks. He was sidelined for the entirety of the 2019, 2023, and 2024 campaigns. Regarding his medical history, reports note that he «missed 2019 due to Tommy John surgery and then the 2023 and 2024 seasons due to surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his pitching arm, as well as having a bone spur removed.»
Details of the Prospect Exchange
The trade involves more than just the veteran starter. According to insights shared by Jon Heyman, left-handed pitcher Colton Gordon will also join the Brewers as part of the transaction. Gordon, who has seen limited action at the major league level this season, has struggled to find his footing, recording an 11.57 ERA across 9.1 innings of work.
