A Last-Minute Decision for the Legend
Serena Williams has confirmed her participation in the singles draw at Wimbledon, following a period of deliberation over the All England Club's final wild-card offer. Although the 44-year-old tennis icon had previously committed to a doubles appearance alongside her sister Venus, she ultimately felt compelled to seize the opportunity to compete at the prestigious tournament once more.
Reflecting on her internal debate, Williams shared at a recent press conference:
«I thought I should really take this opportunity. Who knows if I’ll ever make it here again. This could be it. I was like, ‘What’s wrong with me, Serena? What are you thinking? Are you nuts? Like you really should do this.’ People live to be an athlete. I have this great opportunity to showcase what I do, what I do best, I suppose.»
The Road Back to Competition
This appearance marks Williams' first singles match at the grass-court Grand Slam since 2022. Since stepping away from professional play following the 2022 U.S. Open—a transition she famously described as "evolving" away from the sport—Williams has maintained a low profile in competitive tennis. Her last Wimbledon appearance saw a first-round exit against Harmony Tan, followed by a third-round loss to Ajla Tomljanovic in New York.
Williams admitted that the decision to return to singles was difficult, noting that she remained uncertain about her choice until the final deadline. Despite her status as a seven-time Wimbledon champion, she emphasized that her approach to this tournament is fundamentally different from the past, as her expectations have shifted significantly.
Looking Ahead to the First Round
As part of a high-profile Tuesday schedule at Centre Court, Williams is set to face 20-year-old Australian talent Maya Joint. The day's events will kick off with defending champion Iga Swiatek facing Taylor Townsend, followed by a marquee matchup between Taylor Fritz and Jack Draper. When asked about her upcoming opponent, Williams noted:
«Yeah, actually I know her. I’ve watched some of her videos. I’m sure she knows my game.»
Joint, currently ranked 87th in the WTA, will face one of the greatest challenges of her young career when she takes the court against the legendary American champion.
