While the exact nature of the initial comments remains difficult to discern, the audio captured a loud chant of "USA" immediately following the incident.

Cameras broadcasting the tournament captured the immediate aftermath, showing McIlroy turning toward the gallery to address the individual. The golfer was heard telling the fan to

“shut the fk up,”
