Shohei Ohtani delivered his most impressive pitching performance since joining the Los Angeles Dodgers, lasting seven full innings for the first time in three seasons. During Tuesday night's 2-1 defeat at Daikin Park, Ohtani was remarkably efficient, requiring only 89 pitches to navigate his way through the Astros' lineup. He finished the night with eight strikeouts and did not issue a single walk, marking his longest outing since his shutout performance on July 27, 2023, while with the Angels.
Rare Home Runs Disrupt Momentum
Although Ohtani had successfully navigated his first five starts of the season without allowing a home run, that streak came to an end against Houston. Christian Walker connected for a long ball in the second inning, followed shortly by a second home run from Braden Shewmake, which cleared the left-field wall. These two solo shots represented the only damage against Ohtani, whose season ERA currently sits at an impressive 0.97, maintaining his lead in the National League.
Offensive Woes Continue
The Dodgers' offense continues to face significant challenges. Despite a brief offensive spark on Monday, the team has now been held to two or fewer runs in five of their last seven contests. The club struggled to generate any momentum against Houston's Peter Lambert, who managed to hold the Dodgers scoreless through his seven innings of work. The team's lone run did not arrive until the eighth inning, sparked by a double from pinch-hitter Alex Call and a subsequent RBI single by Kyle Tucker.
The Two-Way Balancing Act
Managing Ohtani’s dual role remains a priority for manager Dave Roberts. While Ohtani has experienced a difficult stretch at the plate—going hitless in his last 17 at-bats—his value on the mound remains undisputed. Addressing the media, Roberts emphasized the necessity of Ohtani’s contributions in both roles:
«I try not to get too far in the weeds on that, because it’s moot. He’s going to do both. He’s one of our best pitchers, he’s one of our best hitters.»
