Official Diagnosis Confirmed
U.S. Soccer officially announced on Thursday that Christian Pulisic suffered a bone bruise and a microfracture in his leg. The injury occurred during the second half of the USMNT's 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the 2026 World Cup Round of 16.
The incident took place in the 52nd minute when Pulisic attempted a shot from outside the penalty area, accidentally striking the back of Youri Tielemans' foot. Although the forward attempted to continue playing, it was evident he was in significant discomfort, leading to his substitution seven minutes later. Pulisic is now expected to face a recovery period of several weeks, with a potential return projected just before AC Milan's Serie A campaign begins on August 23. U.S. Soccer is coordinating with the Italian club to manage his rehabilitation.
Backlash Following World Cup Exit
The defeat to Belgium has sparked significant criticism directed at Pulisic from various football figures. Carli Lloyd, speaking as an analyst, expressed her frustration with the team's star player:
“You wanted some of the big-time players to step up in big moments, and I've got to be honest, I was a bit disappointed in Christian Pulisic. I think, whether he wants to be the star of this team or not, we didn't see enough from him in this particular game and really the whole World Cup.”
Concerns Regarding Pulisic's Entourage
Beyond his on-field performance, the narrative surrounding the player has shifted toward his professional circle. Landon Donovan, a veteran of three World Cups, stated that there is growing frustration among insiders regarding the handling of Pulisic's affairs:
“I speak to people who are at U.S. Soccer, I speak to his sponsors, I speak to his teammates, I speak to the staff and the coaches. People are fed up with the way things are handled around him. And it's not necessarily him, but it's his agents, his family, his hangers-on, the people that are influencing him. People are fed up with it. They treat people poorly. They do things poorly,” Donovan noted.
A History of Tournament Injuries
This setback marks another instance of Pulisic dealing with physical trauma during a major tournament. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he sustained a pelvic injury while scoring against Iran. While he managed to return for the subsequent match against the Netherlands, this current injury leaves him sidelined during a critical period of his club season transition.
