A Massive Wave of Traveling Support
The New York Knicks are currently one victory away from securing their first NBA title in over five decades. Despite the upcoming Game 5 being held in San Antonio, the team will likely feel as though they are playing at home. According to data provided by Gametime, fans from New York and New Jersey markets have purchased 54% of all tickets available for the pivotal matchup.
This surge in away support represents a significant shift from the series' opening games. During Game 1, only 17% of tickets were acquired by fans from the New York/New Jersey region, a number that rose slightly to 23% for Game 2.
Comparison with Madison Square Garden
The intensity of the Knicks' fanbase was also evident when the series moved to New York. For Games 3 and 4 at Madison Square Garden, visitors from San Antonio accounted for a mere 1% of total ticket sales, showing how effectively local supporters locked out the opposition.
For Game 5, the breakdown of sales highlights the massive interest from the East Coast:
- 41% of tickets were bought in New York.
- 13% of tickets were bought in New Jersey.
- In contrast, Texas-based buyers represent only 12% of the sales for this specific game.
Ticket Pricing and Future Outlook
Fans traveling from the New York area may find the current entry prices more palatable than those seen at Madison Square Garden. Per Gametime, the starting price for entry to Game 5 is approximately $1,430. This is a notable decrease compared to Game 4, which saw entry prices soar as high as $13,000 before settling near $3,368 shortly before tip-off.
However, the financial stakes remain high. Should the San Antonio Spurs manage to force a Game 6 back in New York, ticket costs are expected to surge significantly. Current estimates for a potential Game 6 already exceed $11,000, a figure that is projected to climb even higher should the series return to Manhattan.
