Unexpected Exit from the Midsummer Classic
Tampa Bay Rays standout third baseman Junior Caminero was forced to leave Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game prematurely following a concerning hand injury sustained during play.
The Incident
The injury occurred in the top of the third inning. St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Riley O'Brien delivered a high-and-inside sinker that struck Caminero squarely on his left pinky finger. The 23-year-old athlete immediately reacted in pain, falling to the ground while clutching the injured hand.
After a brief recovery period on the field, Caminero walked off to the dugout and was officially removed from the contest. He was replaced at third base and on the basepaths by Chicago White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas.
Medical Status and Outlook
According to reporting from Matt Gelb of The Athletic, Caminero was taken to receive X-rays conducted by a Philadelphia Phillies team physician inside Citizens Bank Park. Fortunately, subsequent reports indicated that the imaging results were negative for any fractures.
Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times noted that the player is currently listed as day-to-day. Providing further reassurance, Caminero himself expressed that he feels fine and anticipates being back in the lineup when the regular season schedule resumes this Friday.

Earlier in the matchup, during his first plate appearance in the opening inning, Caminero recorded a groundout that successfully advanced two American League runners. That momentum helped the AL secure a three-run rally early in the game, providing a lead that remained unchallenged throughout their eventual 4-0 victory.
