A costly defensive attempt
During the opening game of the series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Los Angeles Lakers suffered an early blow when forward Jarred Vanderbilt was forced to leave the court due to an injury to his right hand. The incident occurred as Vanderbilt attempted to contest a dunk by Thunder standout Chet Holmgren at the rim. Unfortunately, he missed the ball and forcefully struck his hand against the backboard at the Paycom Center.
Following the collision, Vanderbilt was visibly distressed, clutching his hand in obvious pain as play continued. He was promptly assisted off the floor and headed to the locker room.
Medical diagnosis and season impact
Lakers head coach JJ Redick confirmed following the contest that Vanderbilt had sustained a full dislocation of his right pinky finger. In his limited six minutes of action before the injury, he recorded two points and one rebound. Throughout the current season, the forward has contributed averages of 4.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
The timeline for his return remains uncertain, which creates further instability for the Lakers as they navigate their Western Conference semifinals matchup. The Thunder dominated the second half of Tuesday’s game to claim a 108-90 victory, extending their impressive postseason win streak to six games.
Lakers dealing with mounting injuries
This injury adds to a growing list of physical setbacks for Los Angeles during the current postseason run. While the team recently saw the return of Austin Reaves from an oblique issue, they remain without other key contributors, including star Luka Dončić, who is sidelined with a hamstring strain.
The teams are scheduled to return to the court for Game 2 on Thursday night.
