An Unlikely Path to Victory
Entering Thursday’s NCAA all-around gymnastics semifinals, the expectations surrounding Oklahoma’s Faith Torrez were notably muted. Throughout the majority of the season, Torrez struggled with an injury that sidelined her for months, preventing her from resuming full training until February.
For most of the season, her participation was restricted to just two events. Consequently, the semifinal meet marked the very first time this year that Torrez competed in the all-around, making her eventual victory even more remarkable.
A Stellar Return to Form
Torrez outperformed the field, securing the all-around title with a total score of 39.7875. Following the trophy presentation, she reflected on the improbability of her success, as reported by ESPN.
«If you would have told me probably two and a half weeks ago that I would be in this position right now doing four events, like living out my dream right now, I'd probably laugh at you. I had no intentions of doing this at the beginning of the season, middle of the season, but to be here and have everything kind of just play out as it did was really amazing. I'm really grateful for that,» Torrez stated.
Prior to the SEC championships, which concluded on March 21, the gymnast was confined to the uneven bars and balance beam due to an ankle injury. Remarkably, she did not practice a floor routine at all during the season until she took the stage on Thursday.
Looking Ahead to the Championship
Torrez's heroics have propelled the Oklahoma team into Saturday's championship meet, where they are set to contend against Florida, LSU, and Minnesota for the national title. This upcoming competition offers Torrez another opportunity to showcase her skills after a season spent primarily on the sidelines.
Should Oklahoma emerge victorious on Saturday, it will mark their fourth national gymnastics title in five years. Their primary competition, LSU, remains the only other program to claim the championship since 2022.
