The Dallas Cowboys are preventing wide receiver George Pickens from entering free agency by applying the franchise tag, as reported by Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein. This move guarantees Pickens will play for the Cowboys next season under a one-year contract valued at around $28 million.
The decision was widely anticipated, following reports earlier this month. Pickens had a career-best season in 2025 after joining Dallas from Pittsburgh, recording 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and 9 touchdowns while playing opposite All-Pro CeeDee Lamb.
Both owner Jerry Jones and COO Stephen Jones have expressed a strong desire to secure Pickens with a long-term contract. Jerry Jones indicated ongoing communication and optimism about a future extension, stating his excitement for Pickens's contributions and potential.
The franchise tag ensures Pickens remains a Cowboy for the 2026 season regardless of ongoing negotiation timelines. However, it also means Dallas will have the NFL's second-most expensive wide receiver duo, with Pickens and Lamb combining for an average annual value of approximately $62 million.
Pickens is among several key Cowboys facing free agency, including starters Jadeveon Clowney and Donovan Wilson. While a long-term extension would have provided more salary cap flexibility, the tag secures the Pro Bowl receiver for the immediate future.
