The outcome of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 8A Track and Field State Championships, held on May 16, has taken a significant turn. A decision that initially caused a national stir on social media has been officially overturned.
The controversy centered on Nyan Brown, a member of the Mallard Creek High School boys' track team. During the 4x400 relay, footage captured Brown nearing the finish line with his arm raised. Despite crossing the line in a celebratory manner, officials handed the team a disqualification, citing unsportsmanlike conduct. The decision was met with widespread disbelief online, as many spectators argued the gesture did not warrant such a harsh penalty.
The Appeals Process
Following the loss, Mallard Creek officials challenged the ruling by filing an appeal with the NCHSAA board of directors and Commissioner Que Tucker. The case was subsequently reviewed by a three-member Independent Interscholastic Athletics Appeals Board, operating under the N.C. State Board of Education.
After a two-hour deliberation that included reviewing evidence and listening to testimonies from both school representatives and athletic officials, the board reached a final verdict on Tuesday. The reversal was based on the conclusion that the athlete did not violate competition rules.
Official Statement and Final Outcome
The Appeals Board stated:
«[Mallard Creek] had presented clear and convincing evidence that the student-athlete did not engage in unsporting or unacceptable conduct as defined in the track and field competition rules of the National Federation of State High School Associations.»
As a result of this ruling, Mallard Creek High School has been named co-state champion in the relay event, as well as an overall co-state champion alongside C.E. Jordan High School.
Commissioner Que Tucker commented on the resolution, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the efforts of the student-athletes:
«At the center of the matter are young people who have invested countless hours into their sport and their team. We appreciate the work of the Independent Interscholastic Appeals Board and respect the process that led to today's outcome. We are pleased that this matter has reached a resolution and that the accomplishments of the student-athletes involved can be recognized.»
With the matter resolved, Nyan Brown is now shifting his focus toward his upcoming collegiate career, where he is set to compete for North Carolina State University next season.
