A Shared Understanding of Intensity

For Lt. Col. Dan Rooney, a former F-16 fighter pilot, the cockpit is a place of immense emotional pressure. Having completed three combat tours in Iraq and later serving as an instructor for the Oklahoma Air Guard, Rooney understands that flying at Mach 2—or training those who do—leaves a lasting impact on a person's mental state. As Rooney noted, the process of decompressing after such high-stakes environments can be complex, often leading to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Rooney himself has grappled with the condition, experiencing claustrophobia and heightened sensitivity to loud noises. However, he emphasizes that his own journey provides him with a unique perspective on the challenges currently faced by his close friend, professional golfer Gary Woodland.

Woodland’s Battle for More Than Just Titles

Gary Woodland, the 41-year-old PGA Tour champion, recently captured his fifth title at the Texas Children’s Houston Open. Yet, his path to this victory was far more significant than the trophy itself; it was a testament to his resilience in the face of a terrifying medical ordeal. Years ago, Woodland began suffering from severe anxiety, tremors, and a fear of death, eventually traced to a brain tumor pressing against the area responsible for anxiety regulation.

In September 2023, Woodland underwent high-risk surgery to remove the mass. While the procedure was successful, the aftermath was grueling. Beyond the physical recovery, Woodland revealed to the public earlier this month that he has been diagnosed with PTSD. He opened up about the reality of his daily struggles, which include hypervigilance and debilitating anxiety that sometimes forces him to hide away just to compose himself.

A Lifelong Bond

The friendship between Woodland and Rooney began in 2006 at the University of Kansas, where a mutual coach introduced them. Rooney was immediately struck by Woodland’s raw athletic ability, famously describing him as "Superman." Over the years, their bond deepened far beyond the golf course:

  • Woodland became a dedicated ambassador for Folds of Honor, the non-profit organization founded by Rooney that provides scholarships to the families of fallen or disabled military members.
  • Rooney officiated Woodland’s wedding in 2016.
  • They share a profound Christian faith, with Rooney acting as a "prayer warrior" for the Woodland family during their most difficult times.

Finding Hope Through Resilience

Rooney has been a steady pillar of support, helping Woodland manage the mental toll of his condition. Even when Woodland struggled with public environments—such as his recent experience at the Houston Open where crowds triggered his hypervigilance—he has learned to navigate his "good days and bad days" with newfound strategies for mental reset.

Following his emotional victory on Sunday, where he secured a five-stroke win, Woodland’s triumph served as an inspiration to many. Reflecting on his friend’s journey, Rooney shared a poignant message: «This isn’t about you. You’re the parable. You’re the vessel that God is working through to give everybody hope.»
