Incident details

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn was involved in a vehicle accident on Wednesday evening, just hours after delivering the decisive hit in his team's 2-1 victory over the New York Mets. The 24-year-old athlete was driving on Interstate 64 near St. Louis when the single-car crash occurred.

According to reports, the accident was attributed to slick road conditions caused by rain. Following the incident, the organization released a statement expressing relief regarding the player's condition: «We are grateful that he is OK, and thank the first responders in our community who helped Masyn tonight».

Medical assessment

Winn, who was traveling alone, received immediate assistance from law enforcement as well as members of the Cardinals' medical and security personnel. He was taken to a local hospital for precautionary evaluations. Fortunately, medical staff determined that he sustained no significant injuries and discharged him shortly thereafter. At this time, it remains uncertain whether Winn will participate in Thursday's game against the Detroit Tigers.

Game-winning performance and career milestones

The accident followed a significant achievement for the young shortstop. In the 11th inning of the game against the Mets, Winn hit a crucial single that secured a walk-off win for St. Louis. This marked the first game-winning hit of his professional career since his debut in August 2023.

Interestingly, Winn's history with the Mets is notable. It was against the same franchise that he recorded his very first MLB hit last year. That moment gained attention when former Mets first baseman Pete Alonso inadvertently threw the souvenir ball into the crowd. Following the mishap, Alonso, who currently plays for the Orioles, reached out to the rookie with a gesture of goodwill. As Alonso noted at the time: «I just wanted to send him something because I didn’t want him to think about anything».

The situation was eventually resolved when the fan who secured the ball returned it to the organization for Winn to keep.
