Kerr Makes Her Mark
Seven years after departing the National Women’s Soccer League as its top goalscorer, Sam Kerr has officially announced her comeback to the competition. The Australian international netted her first goal since rejoining Gotham FC, securing a vital 2-2 draw against the Portland Thorns at Providence Park.
While the goal in the 62nd minute proved decisive, Kerr remained her own harshest critic.
«I’m obviously happy to score, help the team, but I expect more from myself. So I wasn’t too happy with how I played. Quite disappointing, to be honest,»she admitted after the final whistle. Kerr added that she felt the team was fortunate to walk away with a point.
A Historic Signing for Gotham
The 32-year-old striker’s return is viewed as a landmark acquisition for the franchise. After a successful stint with Chelsea in the English Women’s Super League, Kerr signed a long-term contract with the reigning NWSL champions that runs through 2030. Her return is particularly sentimental, as she previously starred for the club between 2015 and 2017 when it operated under the name Sky Blue FC.
Concern Over Emily Sonnett
The match was marred by a serious injury to Gotham defender Emily Sonnett. Only 11 minutes into the game, Sonnett collapsed after a challenge for the ball. She appeared to suffer a left knee injury, requiring medical attention on the pitch before being carried off on a stretcher to applause from the Portland supporters.
Gotham officials confirmed that Sonnett will undergo further medical testing upon returning to New Jersey. She has already been ruled out for the upcoming clash against Bay FC. Given Sonnett's reputation for durability and her vital role as a versatile player for both her club and the U.S. women’s national team, any extended absence would be a significant blow, especially with the World Cup in Brazil approaching next year.
