A Final Gesture of Compassion
On his final day, former NFL defensive end Aldon Smith demonstrated a commitment to community service, visiting a local charity to provide food for the homeless. This selfless act was verified by both the charity's founder and Amir Shirazi, a close friend who accompanied Smith during the delivery.
While Smith’s professional football career was frequently overshadowed by off-field struggles, including various legal issues and suspensions, those close to him noted a significant effort to reshape his life. Shirazi reflected on the athlete’s true character, stating, «He was a very sweet, caring, loving giant. If you really knew him, you’d know who he truly is.»
The Unexpected Passing
Following their charitable visit, the pair arrived at Shirazi’s home. Shortly after briefly stepping inside, Shirazi returned to his vehicle to find Smith unresponsive. While the official cause of death has not been determined, Shirazi noted that Smith appeared healthy just moments prior and suspected natural causes, expressing his deep shock over the sudden loss.
A Legacy of Mentorship
Scott Wagers, co-founder of the CHAM Deliverance Ministry, recalled how the pair arrived unannounced on Saturday to donate ten pizzas to the ministry. Wagers praised the gesture, noting, «My impression was that this is a young man that wanted to help the homeless, which was great. When people like that want to help the community, that’s everything.»
In addition to his recent volunteer work, Smith had been actively involved in mentoring younger athletes. He reportedly visited the San Francisco 49ers' facility to speak with rookies, sharing his life experiences in an effort to guide younger players toward positive personal and professional choices. Aldon Smith was 36 years old.
