This Saturday, May 16, MMA will debut on Netflix for the first time, as Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) brings the sport to Los Angeles' Intuit Dome for what promises to be a historic evening.
The event is headlined by legendary women's pioneers Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano, alongside former UFC stars Nate Diaz and Francis Ngannou. Speaking on Monday's edition of 'The Ariel Helwani Show,' Paul stated he expects the event to surpass the viewership record for any MMA event, as none has exceeded the 10 million mark before.
'We believe this event will be extremely successful — one of the most-watched MMA events,' Paul told Uncrowned. 'We love promotion. We love disrupting. We love helping fighters, and this has already been such a massive success, and the fights haven't even happened yet, so I know it's only upside from here.'
Paul added, 'Making a prediction is always fun, just to see how accurate you could be in terms of viewership. But I don't know, man. I know it's going to do amazing, but I also think there could be something parabolic here, where it even shocks us with how big it is. I'd be happy with 20 million. I think that's a very conservative estimate.'
Historically, when large-scale MMA events competed with the UFC, the global giant often countered with stacked events. However, for Saturday's MVP MMA debut, the UFC is hosting a standard Fight Night in its Meta Apex facility in Las Vegas instead of a major showcase. Paul believes this was a wise decision.
'You wouldn't want to compete with this show. I don't think they could,' Paul said. 'They're already comparing this — our first MMA event — to the most promoted and talked about card, which is UFC [Freedom] 250 at the White House. People are saying our card is better for our first event.'
The UFC's White House event on June 14 features two title bouts atop a seven-fight lineup. Despite this, Paul doesn't dismiss the UFC's ambitious effort but asserts, 'Card-for-card, I think they're at the same level, to be honest. But mostly because of the White House. If we were just talking talent and names, then our card is better.'
Paul and MVP may have struck gold. According to Rousey and Carano, the UFC had this weekend's legends bout in its grasp but declined. Rousey, in particular, has been highly motivated during media appearances, aiming to make a difference and challenge her former fighting home, the UFC. Paul has largely enjoyed the spectacle and welcomes Rousey's potential interest in a non-fighter role with MVP.
'We would love to work with Ronda further,' Paul said. 'She's a great promoter and great on the business side of things. It's been awesome working with her already. It would be great to have her moving forward as part of MVP MMA. From what I can see, she's found more confidence in herself and feels so good about herself and what she's doing. It's been getting me fired up, so I'm here for it and I'm loving it.'
