The Countdown to Draft Day
With the NFL Draft finally arriving, the months of speculation and debate are reaching their conclusion. While fans and analysts have long debated the prospects, the reality of team boards is now coming into focus. After consulting with talent evaluators from ten different NFL franchises, a clearer picture has emerged regarding how teams are valuing the top prospects at each position.
Quarterbacks: Clear Leaders and Internal Disparities
The quarterback rankings revealed strong consensus at the top, but also some notable variance further down:
- Fernando Mendoza: Emerged as the undisputed top prospect, with every evaluator ranking him at the summit of the class.
- Ty Simpson: Firmly held the second position across all consulted boards.
- Carson Beck: Projects as the potential third quarterback selected, though opinions on his profile were polarized. While some see him as a third-round value, others favor Garrett Nussmeier.
As one NFC executive noted: «Bigger than Nussmeier. More success. Better worker. I don’t think Beck is great, but Nuss is a wild card in a bad class.»
Offensive Outlook: Running Backs and Receivers
In the running back category, the talent pool appears shallow early on. Jeremiyah Love is widely viewed as a top-10 prospect, with Jadarian Price likely to follow in the second round. Other backs, including Mike Washington Jr., are generally projected for the third round.
The wide receiver class remains deep, with nine players likely to go within the top 70 picks. Jordyn Tyson, Carnell Tate, and Makai Lemon represent the top tier, though team rankings between Tyson and Tate fluctuated significantly.
The Trenches: Tackles and Guards
Offensive tackle is shaping up to be a high-stakes position. Scouts emphasize that teams needing tackle help must prioritize the position early. A consensus group of six players—including Francis Mauigoa and Spencer Fano—are locked in as first-round prospects. After this group, a significant drop-off in talent is expected until the middle rounds. At guard, Olaivavega Ioane stands alone as the consensus top player at the position.
Defensive Front: Edge and Interior
The edge position is arguably the draft's deepest, with as many as eight players potentially going in the first 50 picks. David Bailey is the undisputed leader of this group. Defensive tackle is defined by a two-man race between Kayden McDonald and Peter Woods, both of whom carry early-to-mid second-round grades.
The Secondary and Linebackers
Linebacker dynamics will be center stage, as both Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles are being discussed as high-draft-capital targets. In the secondary, Caleb Downs leads the safety class, while the cornerback position shows solid depth, with seven players potentially finding homes within the top 70 selections. Mansoor Delane is currently viewed as the top-ranked cornerback among evaluators.
