Despite not being essential for the victory, the eighth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks played much of the second half without star guard Darryn Peterson during their decisive win over Oklahoma State on Wednesday.
Peterson, a projected high NBA Draft pick, has battled injuries and illness all season. He appeared in top form early, scoring 20 of his 23 points in the first half to build a double-digit lead. However, after hitting a three-pointer, he immediately signaled to coach Bill Self to be substituted and did not return.
Coach Self expressed disappointment, stating he believed Peterson was ready to play and that the limited 18-minute outing cost him a potential big night. Peterson finished with 23 points and two assists, including six three-pointers.
This season, Peterson has missed 11 games due to a hamstring strain, ankle sprain, quad issue, and cramping. His recurring absences have drawn criticism, complicating Kansas's preparation for key upcoming games against highly-ranked Houston and Arizona.
With only five regular-season games remaining before the competitive Big 12 tournament, time is running out for Peterson to return to full strength and consistency.
