A Sporting Encounter on the Greens
England football star Harry Kane has publicly addressed recent comments made by former U.S. President Donald Trump, confirming that the two did indeed share a round of golf approximately 18 months ago. The confirmation follows recent remarks from Trump, who spoke highly of the English striker’s skills on the golf course.
Reflections on the Match
During a press conference held in Miami on July 10, ahead of England’s World Cup quarterfinal clash against Norway, Kane provided insight into how the meeting came about. The forward indicated the game likely took place at Trump's International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Recalling the event, Kane remarked:
«I played all right to be honest. We played about 18 months ago. He invited me to play when I was down in Palm Beach. So when the president invites you somewhere… It was a pretty surreal experience just to meet him, and to play golf with him.»
The English captain also offered a compliment regarding Trump's proficiency in the sport, noting, «His golf is pretty good, to be honest. I hope I can play golf as well as him when I’m his age, that’s for sure. So, it was a unique experience. I’m just grateful he invited me down to play.»
Context of Recent Headlines
This revelation comes during a busy period for both the football world and the former president. Beyond his interaction with Kane, Trump made headlines earlier this week regarding his reported attempts to intervene in a disciplinary matter involving U.S. national team striker Folarin Balogun. Although FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated that the call from Trump had no impact on the organization's ruling, Balogun’s suspension was eventually altered, though the U.S. team was ultimately eliminated from the tournament by Belgium.
As for Kane, he continues his impressive form at the World Cup, having tallied six goals thus far, as he prepares to lead England into the high-stakes quarterfinal match at Hard Rock Stadium.
