The Detroit Tigers have confirmed that their star pitcher, Tarik Skubal, will be unable to make his scheduled start this Monday. The 29-year-old left-hander is set to undergo surgery to address loose bodies found in his throwing elbow. Manager A.J. Hinch informed the media that while the procedure is necessary, there is currently no established timeline for when Skubal will be able to return to the mound.
In his absence, the Tigers have named Tyler Holton as the starter for Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox.
Context of the Injury
This medical development follows a concerning moment during Skubal's impressive seven-inning performance against the Atlanta Braves on April 29. During the seventh inning, Skubal was spotted rubbing his arm and shaking it out after delivering a pitch, prompting a brief mound visit.
Despite the discomfort, Skubal finished the inning by striking out three consecutive batters before being pulled with a total of 91 pitches thrown. Following that outing, the pitcher expressed some confusion regarding the sensation in his arm:
«I don’t really know. Cramp is probably the wrong word. We’ve heard the word zinger, I guess, but it wasn’t really like a nervy thing. I don’t know.»
Though Skubal managed to complete his routine training sessions later in the week and initially seemed prepared for his Monday start, the team's medical assessment ultimately necessitated surgery.
