Dominating the Semifinals

Following a challenging opening round, the Detroit Pistons have established a strong foothold in the Eastern Conference semifinals. On Thursday, the team secured a 107-97 victory on their home court, extending their series lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers to 2-0.

Cunningham’s Masterclass

Cade Cunningham once again served as the engine for Detroit’s playoff campaign. He finished the night with 25 points and 10 assists, demonstrating exceptional composure during the second half. Cunningham’s precision was particularly evident at the charity stripe, where he went a perfect 8-for-8, including crucial conversions in the closing minutes. His 12-point surge in the fourth quarter proved instrumental in breaking a tight contest and securing the win.

Intensity and Friction

The game was marked by physical play and tensions between players. Early in the match, an altercation occurred between Cavaliers guard James Harden and Pistons forward Ausar Thompson. The conflict escalated in the second quarter when Thompson was assessed a foul and subsequently shoved Harden to the floor, resulting in a brief benching. Thompson returned to the rotation in the second half but faced ongoing foul trouble, eventually picking up his fifth foul late in the game. Despite this, he made a significant impact in the final minutes, contributing a key tip-in and forcing a pivotal turnover from Harden.

The Comeback Bid

Cleveland remained competitive throughout the night. Donovan Mitchell was a constant threat, erupting in the second half to keep the Cavaliers within striking distance. In the fourth quarter, Evan Mobley helped Cleveland claim their first lead since the opening possessions. However, as Mitchell continued to apply pressure, Cunningham responded with several clutch baskets to regain control for the Pistons.

Despite Mitchell finishing with 31 points and Jarrett Allen adding 22, the Cavaliers ultimately could not bridge the gap. Reflecting on the team's collective effort, Detroit saw strong contributions from Tobias Harris, who scored 21 points, and Daniss Jenkins, who provided 14 points off the bench.

Looking Ahead

The Pistons are currently riding a five-game winning streak, marking a massive turnaround since their 3-1 deficit against the Orlando Magic in the first round. As the series shifts to Cleveland for Game 3 this Saturday, the challenge for Detroit will be to replicate their success away from home, where they have found winning difficult during this postseason run.
