A Challenging Start at Augusta

It has been a sharp turnaround for Bryson DeChambeau at Augusta National. Just a year ago, the golfer was contending for the lead on Sunday at the Masters. However, his opening round of the 2026 tournament told a very different story. Finishing the day at 4-over, DeChambeau finds himself significantly trailing the early leaders, Sam Burns and Rory McIlroy, who both posted impressive rounds of -5.

Following his round, a clearly unsettled DeChambeau spoke with reporters. Reflecting on his performance, he remarked: «Everybody has an ability for weird things to happen, and today I just did not have my irons under control, which is weird.»

The Collapse on the Back Nine

The round began with a measure of stability. DeChambeau remained at even par through the first ten holes, effectively balancing an early bogey on the second hole with a birdie on the third. However, his momentum shifted drastically at the 11th hole.

After a promising drive, his approach shot landed in a greenside bunker. Struggling to navigate the sand, he required three strokes to exit the bunker, ultimately carding a triple bogey that severely hindered his position. Regarding the error, he noted, «Bunker was softer than I anticipated.» A final bogey on the 18th hole sealed his frustrating +4 finish.

Testing Innovation Under Pressure

A major point of interest heading into the tournament was DeChambeau’s decision to incorporate a 3D-printed 5-iron into his bag—a club he manufactured himself. He utilized the prototype only once during Thursday's play, landing over the green on the seventh hole before recovering to save par.

While the use of homemade equipment in a major championship is unconventional, DeChambeau maintains that the decision is backed by rigorous science and adherence to USGA regulations. According to the golfer, the printing process for each club takes roughly eight hours, with an additional day and a half required to ensure the hardware meets all official tournament specifications.

As DeChambeau prepares for his Friday afternoon tee time, he faces a daunting deficit. While a victory may appear unlikely at this stage, the focus for the remainder of his tournament will be diagnosing the technical issues that derailed his opening day.
