Doping Violations Lead to Long-Term Suspension
Albert Korir, the Kenyan athlete who claimed victory at the 2021 New York City Marathon, has received a five-year ban from competition after confessing to doping violations, according to athletics investigators.
The sanctions follow a series of failed drug tests conducted last October in Kenya. During this period, Korir was preparing for his participation in the New York event. Laboratory analysis revealed the presence of CERA, a sophisticated, modern iteration of the blood-boosting hormone EPO, in three separate samples provided by the athlete.
Disqualification of Recent Results
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) officially announced that as part of the disciplinary measures, all of Korir's competitive results achieved since October have been nullified. This includes his third-place performance at the New York Marathon last November.
In their formal ruling, officials noted the severity of the findings:
«The three positive tests constitute clear evidence of the athlete’s use of a prohibited substance on multiple occasions, which is expressly identified in the definition of aggravating circumstances.»
Impact on Career and Future
The 32-year-old runner will be ineligible to compete until January 2031. Authorities opted to reduce the initial suspension by one year as a result of Korir’s decision to accept the charges and waive his right to a formal hearing.
Despite these sanctions, Korir will retain his 2021 New York Marathon title. Throughout his career, the Kenyan runner has seen significant success in the same event, including second-place finishes in 2019 and 2023, as well as a third-place finish in 2024.
