Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, known as “Big Dumper,” was a standout in the 2025 MLB season, leading the league with 60 home runs and 125 RBIs while nearly winning the AL MVP award. Expectations were high for the 2026 season, but through 39 games, Raleigh has become one of the worst hitters in baseball.
On Monday, he went 0-for-4 in a 3-1 win over the Houston Astros, extending his hitless streak to 36 at-bats. His season slash line sits at .157/.238/.320, a stark drop from last year’s .247/.359/.589.
Despite the struggles, analysts suggest a turnaround is likely. Raleigh’s BABIP of .181 is well below his career .248, indicating bad luck. His swing speed and length remain consistent with 2025, ruling out injury or a mechanical overhaul.
However, his strikeout rate has risen to 31.4%, partly due to chasing more pitches outside the zone. Contact rates on pitches in the zone have fallen to 76.2%, and average exit velocity has dropped from 91.3 mph to 86.9 mph. Still, his profile suggests minor adjustments and improved luck could restore his form soon.
