Packers Assessing Quarterback Depth
The Los Angeles Rams are not the sole organization eyeing Kirk Cousins as a potential backup signal-caller. Recent reports indicate that the Green Bay Packers are also weighing their interest in the veteran quarterback.
Evaluating Internal and External Options
During a media session on Monday, Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst acknowledged that the team is actively discussing various options to reinforce their roster following the loss of Malik Willis in free agency. Currently, the depth chart behind starting quarterback Jordan Love features only Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord.
When questioned regarding the possibility of pursuing Cousins, Gutekunst noted that the organization has cast a wide net in their search. As reported by The Athletic, Gutekunst stated:
«Yeah, we've discussed a lot of those options. Obviously that's a guy who's got a lot of pelts on the wall in this league, so we've certainly discussed all those kind of things.»
Familiar Connections and Career Longevity
A potential reunion could be a factor in the team's interest; Packers head coach Matt LaFleur served as the quarterbacks coach in Washington during the initial two years of Cousins' professional career (2012-2013).
Cousins, a veteran with 14 years of experience, appeared in eight games last season while serving as backup to Michael Penix, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Week 11 against the Carolina Panthers. Throughout his lengthy career, Cousins has accumulated 44,700 passing yards, 298 touchdowns, and 131 interceptions.
