A Historic Opening

The New York Yankees have a storied tradition of exceptional pitching, yet Cam Schlittler has achieved a feat never before seen in franchise history. Through his first two appearances of the 2026 season, the right-handed pitcher has set a new standard for the organization.

According to data highlighted by MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, Schlittler is the first Yankees pitcher to begin a season with consecutive starts of at least five scoreless innings while recording seven or more strikeouts in each game.

Dominance on the Mound

Schlittler delivered his latest masterpiece on Wednesday against the Seattle Mariners. During his 6 1/3 innings of work, he surrendered only two hits and issued zero walks, ultimately retiring the final 15 batters he faced. His performance was characterized by absolute control; according to Baseball Savant, hitters managed contact on only seven out of 18 swings against his four-seam fastball.

This follows his successful 2025 breakthrough, where he solidified his spot in the starting rotation. Notably, he etched his name into Yankees history during last year's wild-card round by striking out 12 batters over eight shutout innings in a pivotal elimination game against the Boston Red Sox.

Overcoming Early Season Setbacks

The right-hander’s progress was momentarily stalled by lat and back complications during spring training. These physical constraints led to a strict pitch count during his 2026 debut against the San Francisco Giants, where he was limited to 68 pitches. Despite the restrictions, he was still electric, allowing just one hit and striking out eight across 5 1/3 innings of shutout baseball.

At this stage, the only obstacle preventing Schlittler from deeper outings appears to be predetermined pitch count limitations.

The Yankees' Strong Rotation

Schlittler’s brilliance is reflective of the broader success of the Yankees' pitching staff this year. Collectively, the rotation has been formidable:

  • Total innings pitched: 33 2/3
  • Total strikeouts: 35
  • Total earned runs allowed: 2

With this latest victory, New York has pushed its record to 5-1, currently standing as the top mark in the American League.
