Continued Injury Struggles for Baltimore

Despite a persistent wave of injuries, the Baltimore Orioles continue to remain competitive in the American League East during their inaugural campaign under manager Craig Albernaz. Entering a four-game series against the New York Yankees this past Friday, the team held a 15-16 record, sitting in third place and trailing the division leaders by five games.

However, the team's resilience is being tested once again as they navigate a season marred by health setbacks, which have even extended to the manager himself, who recently suffered a broken jaw and facial fractures.


Helsley Sidelined with Elbow Inflammation

Ahead of the series opener in the Bronx, the organization confirmed that closer Ryan Helsley has been moved to the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Wednesday. The move follows a diagnosis of right elbow inflammation. To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, the Orioles have selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Albert Suárez from Triple-A Norfolk.

Helsley, 31, is currently in his first season with Baltimore after signing a two-year, $28 million deal during the offseason. A former MLB saves leader and two-time All-Star, Helsley has been highly effective this year. Prior to his placement on the injured list, he held a perfect 7-for-7 record in save opportunities with a 2.53 ERA across 10 2/3 innings.


Bullpen Adjustments and Roster Depth

With Helsley out, the Orioles are expected to rely on a committee approach within their bullpen to manage closing duties. Among those expected to contribute is rookie right-hander Anthony Nunez, who successfully secured a save during Helsley’s brief absence last week while he was on the bereavement/family medical emergency list.

Meanwhile, the newly recalled Albert Suárez may see immediate action, with potential for a start on Sunday against the Yankees, particularly as left-handed pitcher Trevor Rogers remains sidelined with an illness.


A Growing List of Absent Players

Helsley and Rogers are among 12 players currently on the injured list for Baltimore. The roster of sidelined talent includes:

  • Starting Pitchers: Dean Kremer (quad) and Zach Eflin (elbow)
  • Infielders: Ryan Mountcastle (foot), Jackson Holliday (hamate), and Jordan Westburg (elbow)
  • Outfielders: Heston Kjerstad (hamstring)
  • Relief Pitchers: Dietrich Enns, Yaramil Hiraldo, Colin Selby, and Félix Bautista (all dealing with various shoulder injuries)

This trend of personnel unavailability is a familiar challenge for the franchise; according to records from last season, the Orioles utilized the injured list 39 times involving 29 different players.
