A Night of Disarray for the Razorbacks
The Arkansas Razorbacks experienced a total breakdown during their Sweet 16 matchup in San Jose on Thursday night. What was already a challenging contest against top-seeded Arizona spiraled into a chaotic 109-88 defeat, highlighted by an ejection, a foul-out, and a technical foul assessed to head coach John Calipari in the closing minutes.
The accumulation of errors significantly dampened the team's exit from the NCAA tournament, turning a difficult game into a frustrating collapse.
Flagrant Foul and Immediate Ejection
With roughly seven minutes remaining, the tension peaked when Arkansas guard Billy Richmond struck Arizona forward Ivan Kharchenkov while navigating a screen. Kharchenkov was sent sliding toward the sideline following the heavy contact. Officials reviewed the play and issued a flagrant 2 foul against Richmond, resulting in his automatic removal from the game. At the time of the incident, Arizona held a 19-point lead, effectively sealing their path to victory.
Pringle's Departure and Bench Frustration
Moments later, the situation deteriorated further for Arkansas. Forward Nick Pringle fouled out of the game less than 20 seconds after Richmond's exit. His departure was compounded by his own reaction: after shoving Arizona center Motiejus Krivas during a rebound battle, Pringle was whistled for a foul and subsequently slammed the ball on the court, which earned him a technical foul. Following the resulting free throws, Arizona extended their lead to 24 points.
Adding to the night of frustration, head coach John Calipari was also hit with a technical foul. While it remains unclear exactly what was said or who directed the comments toward the officials, the outburst was severe enough to warrant the penalty.
A Historic Defeat
While these late-game mistakes did not solely cause the loss—as Arkansas was already trailing by double digits—they underscored a lack of composure. Arizona displayed the form of a legitimate national championship contender, securing a decisive 21-point win.
For Calipari, the result was particularly harsh. This loss stands as the largest margin of defeat in his NCAA tournament career, spanning 85 tournament games. As Arizona moves forward to face No. 2 Purdue in the Elite Eight on Saturday, Arkansas heads home after a second consecutive Sweet 16 exit.
