AUGUSTA, Ga. — Brandon Holtz, the amateur who qualified for the Masters by winning last year's U.S. Mid-Amateur, missed the cut after rounds of 81 and 78. Yet on Saturday, he was back at Augusta National, not as a player, but as a patron, continuing his annual tradition.

Holtz and his family gathered at the par-3 6th hole to place their classic closest-to-the-pin bets, with losers buying beers. "Bring money," was the instruction. The group cheered for shots by Sergio Garcia and Maverick McNealy, with Holtz himself engaging with fellow fans, including former NBA stars like Dwyane Wade.

Reflecting on his two competition rounds, Holtz highlighted the course's extreme demands. "The speed—in the fairways, around the greens, on the greens," he said. He described a daunting shot on the 15th hole where patrons laughed as he deliberated over a tricky wedge shot, which he ultimately executed perfectly for a birdie.

The day was filled with unique interactions. Other patrons, volunteers, and even a State Farm agent recognized him. He shared a memorable moment from Friday, playing rock-paper-scissors with kids on the 16th hole before tossing them golf balls to their delight.

His wife, Liz, described the surreal experience of watching her husband play after years of attending the Masters together as spectators. Meanwhile, Holtz's young children enjoyed the Par-3 Contest, adding a family layer to the whirlwind week.

Despite the scorecard result, for Holtz, the Masters experience was about the lifelong memories made both inside and outside the ropes.
