A shooting at a high school hockey game in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on Monday resulted in three fatalities, including the suspected gunman. Three additional victims were hospitalized in critical condition, according to Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves.
Police responded to the Dennis M. Lynch Arena after reports of gunfire around 2:30 p.m. ET. Officers found the suspected shooter dead at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. One victim was pronounced dead at the arena, and another died after being transported to a hospital.
Chief Goncalves stated the incident appears to be a "targeted event" possibly stemming from a family dispute. The FBI and ATF assisted at the scene, confirming no further threat to the community. The shooting occurred during a game between cooperative high school teams.
Witnesses reported hearing gunshots during a live stream of the game, prompting players and spectators to flee. Area school districts confirmed no students were among those shot. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities interview witnesses.
