A Major Absence in the Squad

Following the official announcement of Iran’s roster for the upcoming World Cup this Monday, football fans were surprised by a notable omission. Sardar Azmoun, often referred to as the “Iranian Messi,” will not be traveling with the national team.

The Allegations Against Azmoun

The 31-year-old forward, who has previously showcased his talents at clubs like AS Roma and Bayer Leverkusen and currently competes for Shabab AlAhli Dubai FC, has faced severe accusations from Iranian officials. Reports indicate that the player has been accused of “treason” and “disloyal behavior.”

The Root of the Controversy

The friction between the player and the authorities stemmed from a specific social media post. Azmoun shared a photograph on his Instagram profile—which boasts an audience of over 5.8 million followers—featuring himself alongside the Emir of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Given the Emir's geopolitical alignment as an ally of the United States and his support for policies opposed by the Iranian government, the image was perceived as a provocative act.

Although the post was removed shortly after being uploaded, the damage was already done. The authorities imposed sanctions on the athlete, effectively barring him from participating in the national squad for the tournament. As the team prepares for their matches in Group G—where they are set to face Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand—the absence of their star striker remains a significant point of discussion.
